The little pro

The EVE Audio SC205 is a compact, active two-way studio monitor from the SilverCone series that proves that even small speakers can sound great. Thanks to the combination of an AMT tweeter and a 5" SilverCone woofer, it achieves precise audio reproduction over the stated frequency range between 53Hz and 21kHz. The tweeter and SilverCone woofer are powered by two 50W Class D amplifiers. An internal, high-resolution DSP also provides filters that allow precise adjustment to the monitoring environment. The SC205 studio monitor receives signals via either an RCA or XLR connection.

Smart knob and DSP

The internal DSP electronics include a high-quality Burr-Brown AD converter with 24Bit/192kHz, which converts analogue input signals via RCA and XLR into digital signals and sends them unaltered to the DSP for further processing. Levelling of the system volume as well as the adjustment of filters for room variables are made via the front smart knob, while the LED ring displays the selected settings. The brightness of the LEDs can be dimmed for dark lighting conditions. The DIP switches on the back of the housing are also worthy of special mention, as they can be used to protect volume and filter settings against unintentional adjustments.

Optimum price-performance ratio

Thanks to high-quality components, the compact EVE Audio SC205 achieves incredible sound quality on a par with larger models. The SC205 is characterised by high transparency and a bass response that is extremely precise relative to its size, starting at 53Hz. This makes it the perfect monitor speaker for all situations in which larger speaker systems cannot be used due to lack of space, or where smaller monitors are needed for comparative listening. Experienced home studio owners as well as professional sound and post-production studios get a high-quality monitor at a fair price with the SC205.

About EVE Audio

The German company EVE Audio is based in Berlin and was founded in 2011. It dedicates itself to the production of professional studio monitors in various versions, which deliver detailed sound not only to sound engineers but also to consumers. The company offers monitors for every application in a wide variety of rooms and for every budget. Thanks to the enhanced technology of the Air Motion Transformer, all of the company's speakers are characterised by minimal sound discolouration, precise tweeter adjustment, and improved distortion behaviour. The SC3010 and SC3012 monitors were introduced in March 2014, followed in April 2015 by the SC203 desktop speaker and the PMR 2.10 passive monitor router. Today, EVE Audio products are sold in more than 60 countries.

For stereo and multi-channel use

The SC205 from EVE Audio can be used for various nearfield setups. For example, the two-way speaker when used as a pair serves as an excellent main monitor in small production rooms. For this purpose, it is recommended that it be combined with a subwoofer from the ThunderStorm series, which supports the SC205 speakers in the low end for an even wider frequency range. The SC205 also makes for a good B monitor, and it can be used in multi-channel systems, whether as a centre, rear, or front speaker. This makes EVE Audio's SC205 a versatile monitoring tool for music and multimedia applications.

In the spotlight: SilverCone

EVE Audio uses a honeycomb-structured sandwich diaphragm for the SilverCone woofers of its SC models, which thanks to glass fibre coating offers an optimum balance between material rigidity and the production of resonances for precise playback. A copper-cap magnet system further reduces potential distortion. The result is a low distortion factor and increased transparency. Depending on the monitor model, the diaphragm is also driven by a 1" or 1.5" voice coil, which enables dynamic bass reproduction through a high, linear excursion.

For the job it’s advertised ( quality sound reproduction) it’s absolutely amazing for the price. It doesn’t have lots of SPL and sounds a little distorted at really high levels but it’s not meant to be used as a party speaker. At low to medium levels - really well done.

Stereo separation and overall sound is just a tiny bit towards Hi-Fi side but not in a bad way. I previously had professional monitors which were a little fatiguing on the ears after listening to them for longer periods - EVE’s don’t fatigue the ear at all and sounds very balanced. One thing to mention - they aren’t mid forward so in a professional scenario you might want to pair these with other speakers for monitoring. But all in all - very very nice and I’d say they’re perfect for home studio scenarios.

A few negatives... build quality is just okay - small bits of glue there and there and LEDS on one monitor are brighter which is really annoying when working in the dark. It doesn’t compromise the sound in any way but I would call it far from “premium” feel monitors and even cheaper models have better build quality.

No high pass filter even though one DIP switch is left unused is also a negative as it makes it harder to pair with other subwoofers and it simply could have just been indcluded.

Overall - I’m quite happy with the purchase and hope that the interiors are made better than aesthetics. Sound quality wise - it’s really REALLY good and I would highly recommend it if sound quality is nr.1 priority.

P.S. Their support team is really a pleasure and are willing to spend time to make their customers happy

Really the best in its class

If you mix music and are looking to upgrade your studio monitors from the sub-optimal entry-level models, this is the one!

Their frequency response is super flat and their transients reproduction is stellar!

Depending on the size of your room you might wanna buy the bigger model (SC207), but for most bedroom producers this model is gonna be the perfect match.

Controller chip cheaply made
FlyingMachines 25.08.2023
One of them completely failed after 7 years. Although that's not an obscene time, it turns out this is actually a common problem with these speakers. Had mine been an exception, I would have been okay with it, but it's not one. It's common, and it's not been addressed by Eve Audio either.

These speakers aren't made to last like other studio monitors. When I turn it on, even without any audio cable plugged in, it starts generating a loud phasing and sweeping white noise sort of. That's similar to what has happened with others', and some in the know says it's the controller chip that's bad, and that seems likely considering the symptoms.

Also noticed is that after just a few years, I'd start having issues with the control knob freezing, so I had to pull the power and restart the speaker. This has happened with both my speakers. Which is likely related to the controller chip as well. That in itself wasn't a big issue since it didn't stop functioning, was easily fixed and happened rarely.

Also reported is that Eve Audio doesn't acknowledge the issue and then have taken no public steps in improving the quality. Needless to say, I can't buy any more speakers from them, as they obviously don't deliver the necessary trust in their products.

It is a shame, because other than that, these speakers are great. I AB-ed them when buying them, and the ribbon tweeters really gives wonderful responsive transients. The control knob is good, and the fade-in and fade-out they do on power on and power off is nice. They deliver a solid punch for their size, also in the low end.

EDIT 26.8.2023: Second one just failed as well, only a few months after the first one. It also generates random noise at power on.
